 I’m delighted to gain this protection against COVID-19, but given my history of weight-based discrimination within the medical establishment, I can’t help worrying about the potential scrutiny I’m subjecting my body to. I don’t take my ability to get vaccinated for granted, especially given how long many restaurant workers, delivery workers, and other essential workers have been waiting for the same right; if I’m vaccinated, I’ll be able to know that I’m at less risk of spreading the disease to someone worse positioned to recover from it, and that’s reason enough for me. But even as I made my appointment, I felt a little funny that my BMI, a label I’d always brushed off as arbitrary—or, more accurately, expressly fatphobic—was what was allowing me to get my slot.

I never made much effort to get to know people here, because if I wanted company, I imported it from the I Like Dogs And Elephants And Maybe Three People Shirt Additionally,I will love this city. And it meant a continual level of disruption. Of packing and going back and forth, of leaving the left shoe on Long Island and the right shoe in the city. But with the pandemic, my perspective is changing. I’ve been here for six months now. It is starting to feel like home. It seems like a place I could live. Really live. Find a dentist and a doctor, vote, and most important, when I meet new people, say, “I live in Bellport. Yeah, no one has ever heard of it. It’s a little town on Long Island.” Long Island! So many of my friends in the city escaped Long Island. Am I really ready to choose it, and a small town at that, just a prettier version of my original little town?

Ironically, New York taught me to live in a small town. It made me comfortable in my skin, able to make small talk with the guy at the deli, able to join the block association and the coop board, able to reach out instead of hiding in books. Greenwich Village has always been my urban small town. I run into people I know, standing on the street with the dog, or walking to the subway, or usually, embarrassingly, eating a cookie, having learned long ago that calories don’t count if you are in motion.
