All I wanted at 11 years old was to look like Spears, Lindsay Lohan, Hilary Duff, or any of the other members of their teen-queen cohort, but I was too young to understand the price they paid for their conventional prettiness; they were still girls when the world agreed to begin treating them like women, which is to say…terribly. The question of consent looms large in Framing Britney Spears, leading one to wonder: At what age can a young woman—or, more accurately, a girl—give informed consent to her own objectification? What do “regular girls” learn from watching a Britney or a Lindsay get alternately paid and excoriated for revealing the minutiae of their lives and their bodies?

I didn’t have much in common with Spears as a tween—I was anonymous where she was famous, bookish where she was bubbly, brunette where she was honey blonde, chubby when she was lean—but both of us, along with pretty much every other girl in our loosely defined age group, were simultaneously expected to perform womanhood and girlhood, and God forbid we did too much of the former at the expense of the latter.
