 The intro to modeling was unexpected. Asked by a few art student pals to pose for their projects while part of a year-long exchange program at London’s Goldsmiths College, Taira was scouted officially upon returning to Japan and is now signed to Ford Models in New York. A media, communication, and culture major while in college, their pre-fashion plans were to dive deeper into academia. “I was studying identity politics and gender studies, specifically,” says Taira. “Primarily with media studies, semiotics, and identity, which I was quite interested in. I took several modules related to ethnicity and gender, and since my school is an International one, I was able to transfer the credits I’d earned in London. While I studied sociology and anthropology, as they were relevant to my interests, then I completed the dissertation back in Japan.”

The minimalist images and accompanying film highlight the beauty of the 25-year-old star. Defying the “scouted in junior high” stereotype, Taira entered the industry last year with a bit of life experience. “I’ve been fortunate in that sense, and I feel grateful,” they shared on the phone from London. “Modeling has been a great way to explore identity and parts of myself even further, to delve deeper into things that intrigued me and think deeply about issues I studied while at university.”

I never made much effort to get to know people here, because if I wanted company, I imported it from the I Like Dogs And Elephants And Maybe Three People Shirt Additionally,I will love this city. I couldn’t bring myself to sell our apartment in the city, even though I was spending only three nights a week there. Having two places felt wasteful and unwise. And it meant a continual level of disruption. Of packing and going back and forth, of leaving the left shoe on Long Island and the right shoe in the city. But with the pandemic, my perspective is changing. I’ve been here for six months now. It is starting to feel like home. It seems like a place I could live. Really live. Find a dentist and a doctor, vote, and most important, when I meet new people, say, “I live in Bellport. Yeah, no one has ever heard of it. It’s a little town on Long Island.” Long Island! So many of my friends in the city escaped Long Island. Am I really ready to choose it, and a small town at that, just a prettier version of my original little town?

Ironically, New York taught me to live in a small town. It made me comfortable in my skin, able to make small talk with the guy at the deli, able to join the block association and the coop board, able to reach out instead of hiding in books. Greenwich Village has always been my urban small town. I run into people I know, standing on the street with the dog, or walking to the subway, or usually, embarrassingly, eating a cookie, having learned long ago that calories don’t count if you are in motion.
